LIONS KNOCKOUT KNIGHTS IN QUARTERFINALS: The @jserra.girlsvb team moved to within one win of a CIF-SS title match appearance, as the Lions defeated the Bishop Montgomery Knights 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 in a CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals match on Wednesday at JSerra Catholic High School.
The Lions improve to 20-14 overall and will travel to West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch on Saturday for a semifinal battle with the Wildcats, who defeated Orange Lutheran in five sets in their quarterfinals match.
JSerra took control of their match-up with the Knights early, surging to 13 of the first 16 points in the opening set.
Sophomore Madison Goodrich sparked the Lions with a strong serving run that featured two aces, while seniors Charlotte Nowak and Catherine Beadles also delivered kills.
Nowak sealed the opening set with a kill.
JSerra led 13-12 in the second set, but with Beadles serving, the Lions produced a key run of five straight points to forge an 18-12 advantage.
Bishop Montgomery trimmed the deficit to 20-18, but consecutive kills by Charlotte Nowak and junior Katherine Nowak produced a four-point set win for the Lions.
JSerra tallied six straight points to open the third set, punctuated by an ace from Beadles and a block from senior Ava Ziegler, but Bishop Montgomery answered by scoring 10 of the next 15 points to pull within a point.
But the Lions answered with the match-sealing run, as a block from Katherine Nowak and two straight blocks by Ziegler helped spark seven straight points for the Lions.
Beadles clinched the victory with a kill on match point.
Katherine Nowak finished with a team-high 13 kills, while Charlotte Nowak added 11 kills.
Beadles finished with a team-high 21 assists, nine digs, and two assists.
Goodrich supplied a team-leading 18 digs.
