The @jserra_boys_water_polo team and Harvard-Westlake battled toe-to-toe in a tight, nonleague contest with the Wolverines pulling out a 17-16 overtime victory at JSerra Catholic High School.
JSerra is now 13-3 overall.
The two teams played to a 3-3 tie at the end of the first period, with Lions goals scored by sophomore Sasha Bjelica, junior Andrew Schneider, and junior Lars Knepper.
Knepper tallied his second score to open the second period, with senior Joe Wraith and junior Dylan Park also producing scoring strikes.
But the Wolverines matched the Lions’ scoring output in the quarter and the game was tied 6-6 at halftime.
Wraith produced a scoring surge in the third period with three goals, with junior Ronan Keane adding a goal, as JSerra took a 10-9 lead into the final period.
Bjelica’s second five-meter goal boosted the Lions lead to 11-9 with 5:03 remaining, but the Wolverines knotted the game at 11-11 with 3:44 left.
Schneider’s second goal of the contest with 2:32 left gave the Lions a 12-11 advantage, but the Wolverines found the equalizer with exactly 1:00 minute remaining to send the game into overtime.
Schneider tallied his third goal of the game in the first overtime period, but the Wolverines claimed a 14-13 lead entering the second overtime period.
Schneider, senior Cayden Taylor, and junior Christian Yonker produced goals in the second overtime period, but the Wolverines held on for the one-goal victory.
