UNDEFEATED LIONS ADVANCE TO DKTOC SEMIS: The undefeated @jserra.softball team is headed to the semifinals of the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions, as the Lions improved to 9-0 with two wins on Friday in Bullhead City, Arizona.
JSerra opened by defeating the Bonita Bearcats by a score of 4-1 at Mojave High School.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Lions answered in the bottom of the inning.
Sophomore Annabel Raftery reached on an error and was sacrificed to second base by freshman Ava Born.
Freshman Magenta De Arte singled to center to put runners on the corners, and junior Brooklyn Lamb followed by slapping a line drive RBI single to center field to score Raftery.
JSerra took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sophomore Leah Arrey connected on a one-out double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single to center field by junior Angie Jimenez.
The Lions stretched the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
De Arte poked a double to the wall in left field to start the inning, and one batter later, senior Zena Edwards blasted a shot over the wall in right center field for her second home run of the season.
That proved to be more than enough run support for junior Abby Ford, who tossed an impressive complete game by allowing only two hits while striking out eight.
JSerra finished out the day with a 2-0 victory over previously undefeated Norco.
Edwards supplied the decisive swing of the contest in the top of the first inning, as she laced a two-out, two-strike, two-run double past the Cougars first baseman and down the right field line that scored junior pitch runner Anneke Lukowski and Lamb.
Senior Liliana Escobar continued her brilliance in the circle.
She held the Cougars to two hits through five innings while striking out 10 batters.
Norco put the first two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning with a hit and a HBP, but Escobar slammed the door with three straight strikeouts to finish off her fifth straight complete game shutout.
Escobar has not allowed an earned run in 39 innings pitched.
