The @jserra.girlsflagfootball team opened the Chargers Flag Football Invitational on Friday with two victories at Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa.
JSerra began the day with a 24-0 triumph over the Camarillo Scorpions.
Sophomore Tessa Russell spearheaded the victory, catching touchdown passes of one yard and three yards.
Russell also intercepted two passes, returning the second one 46 yards for a touchdown.
Senior Kai Beary, sophomore Sterling Flores, and senior Kayla Fernandez each recorded an interception.
Sophomore quarterback Kate Meier completed 10-of-15 passes for 113 yards with a touchdown pass and a four-yard scoring run.
Beary recorded a team-high five catches for 73 yards.
JSerra capped the day with a 19-6 win over the Westlake Warriors.
Senior G.G. Szczuka supplied the Lions’ offense in the first half, scoring on a catch-and-run 14-yard pass and a 53-yard scoring toss, (both from Meier) to give JSerra a 13-0 lead at halftime.
Westlake narrowed the margin to 13-6 midway into the second half, but Meier tossed a two-yard scoring pass to sophomore Judy Meyers for the final points of the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second half.
Meier completed 23-of-33 passes for 257 yards.
Russell finished with seven receptions for 112 yards, while Szczuka also recorded seven catches for 97 yards.
Senior Avery Olson added an interception for the Lions.
