LIONS CLIP COUGARS IN EXTRA INNINGS: The @jserra.softball team closed out the Dugard Classic in dramatic walk-off fashion on Saturday, as the Lions edged the Capistrano Valley Cougars 2-1 in eight innings at Bill Barber Memorial Park in Irvine.
The Lions are now 15-3 on the season.
JSerra took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Junior Angie Jimenez doubled to left with one out, and one batter later, sophomore Ava Van Heerde slashed a two-out, RBI single to center field to score Jimenez.
Capistrano Valley tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
Junior Abby Ford relieved sophomore starter Madeline Capek (who allowed one run and three hits) in the fourth inning and pitched five hitless innings with 11 strikeouts to keep the game tied heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
With sophomore Annabel Raftery starting the frame as the extra inning courtesy runner at second base, sophomore Leah Arrey moved her to third with a bunt single and advanced to second base.
Junior Anneke Lukowski supplied the game-deciding swing after a fantastic 15-pitch battle, as she chopped an infield single off the glove of the Cougars’ third baseman to score Raftery with the game-winning run.
Lukowski finished the game 2-for-2.
