The @jserra.girlsflagfootball team improved to 20-0 on the season, as the Lions defeated the Santa Margarita Eagles 34-20 in a Trinity League game on Tuesday at JSerra Catholic High School.

JSerra has now won 48 straight games dating back to last season.

Santa Margarita took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Lions captured a 7-6 lead on its first possession, as sophomore quarterback Kate Meier tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Tessa Russell.

Meier and Russell duplicated their scoring connection from the same yardage distance in the second quarter to give JSerra a 14-6 lead they would take into halftime.

Santa Margarita narrowed the deficit to 14-12 with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter.

Facing 4th and 5 from the Eagles 25-yard line with 1:40 left in the period, Meier uncorked a high-arching pass into the end zone for sophomore Abby VanderWeerd, who soared high and made a spectacular finger-tipped catch for the touchdown to increase the Lions’ lead to 21-12.

Meier threw her fourth touchdown pass of the game to senior Avery Olson from two yards out to give the Lions a 28-12 advantage with 8:18 remaining.

Meier, who completed 31-of-38 passes for 319 yards, capped JSerra’s scoring output with a five-yard scoring run with 3:52 remaining.

Senior Kai Beary recorded a team-high nine catches for 92 yards, while Russell finished with eight catches for 98 yards.

Olson and junior Addison Briseno each added five receptions.

Junior Anna Paquette recorded a team-leading five flag pulls, while VanderWeerd added four flag pulls. ...
