The @jserra.football team made it back-to-back victories on Friday, as the Lions outlasted the Crean Lutheran Saints 37-29 in a spirited nonleague clash at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine.
The Saints took the opening kickoff and drove down for the game’s first touchdown, but the Lions responded immediately on their first drive of the night.
Senior Will Fredericksen found a seam down the left sideline and burst into the end zone for a 21-yard rushing score to tie the game at 7-7.
Fredericksen put the Lions ahead 14-7 with 8:00 remaining in the second quarter, powering into the end zone from a yard out on 4th-and-goal.
JSerra increased the advantage to 21-7 with 3:56 left in the half, as senior quarterback Hayes Cloutier scrambled to his left and hit junior wide receiver Sam Fredericksen in the end zone for a five-yard scoring reception.
The Saints narrowed the deficit with a touchdown with 0:57 seconds remaining before halftime, but Cloutier and senior Clark Cokley (who had eight receptions in the first half) led the Lions into field goal range and senior Evan Leddy connected on a 37-yard attempt to give JSerra a 24-14 halftime advantage.
Cloutier and Sam Fredericksen dialed up their second scoring connection with 7:11 left in the third quarter with Fredericksen hauling in a 24-yard pass in the end zone to give the Lions a 30-14 lead.
The Saints cut the deficit to eight points with a touchdown with 10:18 remaining in the game.
JSerra faced 4th and 8 on the Saints’ 31-yard line on their ensuing drive.
Cloutier scrambled through the line, found a massive hole in the middle of the field, and scampered into the end zone to give the Lions a 37-22 lead with under seven minutes remaining.
Crean Lutheran narrowed the gap again to eight points with a touchdown with 2:34 left.
But Will Fredericksen punctuated a 100-yard night on the ground with two strong rushing first down to seal the victory.
