The undefeated @jserra.girlsflagfootball team used its’ defensive muscle to produce a definitive triumph on Tuesday, as the Lions overwhelmed the Orange Lutheran Lancers by a score of 38-0 in a Trinity League clash at JSerra Catholic High School.
JSerra improves to 18-0 on the season and 3-0 in league play, while stretching the nation’s longest program winning streak to 46 consecutive games dating back to last season.
The Lions and Lancers played to a scoreless first quarter, but JSerra opened the second quarter with a scoring explosion courtesy of its’ defense.
On the first play of the quarter, junior Anna Paquette leaped high and snatched Lancers’ pass, returning the interception 15 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions a 6-0 lead.
On the second play of the Lancers’ ensuing possession, sophomore Tessa Russell stepped in front of a Lancers pass and sprinted 10 yards into the end zone to increase the Lions lead to 12-0.
Two plays later, Russell duplicated the feat, stepping right in front of a Lancers pass and racing 25 yards for her second pick-six in less than a minute to boost JSerra’s advantage to 18-0.
Sophomore quarterback Kate Meier added an eight-yard scoring run with 10 seconds remaining in the half that put the Lions ahead 25-0 at the halftime intermission.
JSerra used the hook-and-ladder play to perfection with 2:37 remaining in the third period to build the lead to 31-0, as Meier completed a short pass to sophomore Sterling Flores, who pitched the ball to senior G.G. Szczuka to complete a nine-yard touchdown.
Flores recorded the Lions’ fourth interception of the game later in the third quarter and finished off the ensuing possession with a 16-yard touchdown reception from Meier.
Meier finished 28-of-43 for 267 yards.
Senior Kai Beary had a team-best six receptions for 64 yards.
Russell added five catches for 57 yards, with senior Avery Olson also recording five receptions for 46 yards.
Szczuka had a team-best two sacks on defense, while Paquette also added a sack.
