LIONS CLAIM FIRST CIF-SS TITLE: The @jserra.softball team has tasted the thrill of championship glory for the first time in program history on Friday, as the Lions edged the La Mirada Matadores 3-2 in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game at Deanna Manning Stadium at Bill Barber Memorial Park in Irvine.
The Lions close out their run to the championship with nine wins in their last 10 games and finish 25-8.
JSerra put the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Senior Zena Edwards reached on fielders choice with two outs and stole second base.
Freshman Magenta De Arte worked the count full at 3-2 before lining a sharp single into right field to score Edwards.
JSerra added to the advantage in the bottom of the second.
Freshman Ava Born drove a two-out double into the gap in right center field to score sophomore Ava Van Heerde.
Sophomore Annabel Raftery followed with a booming double off the wall in left field to plate Born and increase the lead to 3-0.
La Mirada loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third inning, but junior Angie Jimenez snatched a line drive up middle to end the threat.
The Matadores finally broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, narrowing the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
La Mirada mounted one final challenge in the top of the seventh inning, putting the first two runners on base, but Escobar slammed the door with her 12th strikeout to seal the Lions historic title win.
