The @jserra.girlsflagfootball team impressively flexed its’ collective muscle against some of the top teams in Southern California this weekend, as the Lions claimed the Division 1 Gold Bracket championship at the Chargers Girls Flag Football Invitational on Saturday at the Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa.
JSerra kicked off the day with a 28-0 victory over Dos Pueblos in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore quarterback Kate Meier threw for 239 yards and four touchdown passes, two to senior G.G. Szczuka (five yards and one yard) and one apiece to senior Kai Beary (six yards) and sophomore Tessa Russell (26 yards).
Seniors Avery Olson and Kayla Fernandez each recorded an interception, with Beary, Szczuka, and senior Viv Devir each earning a sack.
JSerra then took on Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran in the semifinals, with the Lions rolling past the Lancers by a score of 27-6.
Meier accounted for four touchdowns in the first half, running for scores of three yards and nine yards, while tossing two scoring passes to Russell (17 yards and 18 yards).
JSerra collided with Newport Harbor in the championship game.
Sophomore Sterling Flores ended the Sailors’ first drive with an interception, which set up a one-yard scoring run by Meier.
Newport Harbor pulled to within a point with a touchdown later in the half, but Meier layered a beautiful 26-yard scoring strike down the middle of the field to Russell to give JSerra a 14-6 lead at the half.
Meier’s legs helped put the Lions ahead 21-6 with a six-yard touchdown and Beary put the finished touches on a 23-6 victory with a late safety.
