LIONS SWEEP ON OPENING DAY: It was a victorious start to the season for the @jserra.softball team on Friday, as the Lions opened play at the SoCal’s Finest Tournament with back-to-back victories at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills.
JSerra began the day with a 2-1 eight inning triumph over the Chino Hills Huskies.
The Lions trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning, but sophomore Ava Van Heerde tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line to score junior Brooklyn Lamb, who started the rally with a two-out double.
Sophomore Madeline Capek started in the circle and pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out three.
Senior Liliana Escobar held the Huskies hitless in four innings of relief, striking out seven in the process.
Senior Ava Geoghegan sacrificed junior Angie Jimenez to third to start the bottom of the eighth inning.
Sophomore Annabel Raftery provided the definitive swing of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jimenez with the game-winning run.
In the second game, JSerra doubled up the Roosevelt Mustangs by a score of 4-2.
The Lions struck for two runs in the bottom of the second inning with two outs, as Jimenez doubled into the gap in right center to score senior Zena Edwards, followed by an RBI double into the left center field gap by Raftery to plate Jimenez.
JSerra added a run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI groundout to second base by Lamb to score freshman Magenta De Arte, who tripled to center to lead off the inning.
De Arte, who went 3-for-3 in the game, drove in the Lions’ final run with an RBI double to center to score fellow freshman Ava Born.
Escobar started in the circle against the Mustangs and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out seven.
Lamb closed out the victory in the circle by striking out four in two innings.
