LIONS CLAIM TITLE AT INAUGURAL SURF & TURF INVITATIONAL
The undefeated JSerra Girls Flag Football team basked in the glow of a tournament crown on Saturday, as the Lions blanked the Carlsbad Lancers 19-0 in the Surf Division championship game of the inaugural Surf & Turf Invitational at JSerra Catholic High School.
The Lions tournament title journey got underway on Friday with two victories.
Sparked by three receiving touchdowns by freshman wide receiver Sterling Flores, JSerra defeated Mission Viejo 39-0.
Freshman quarterback Kate Meier and junior wide receiver G.G. Szczuka connected on touchdown passes of 1, 60, and 61 yards in the Lions’ 25-12 win over Warren High School.
JSerra opened play on Saturday by advancing to the title game with a 33-6 win over La Serna High of Whittier, highlighted by two touchdown passes apiece by Meier and sophomore quarterback Ava Van Heerde and three scoring receptions by freshman wide receiver Ava Irwin.
That set up a battle with undefeated Carlsbad in the title game, who edged Classical Academy High School 7-6 in the semifinals.
Meier found junior Kai Beary on a 14-yard scoring pass with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half to help give the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Irwin produced a highlight grab later in the half, as she leaped high and snatched a 22-yard scoring pass from Meier to increase the Lions’ advantage to 13-0.
Junior Stella Day provided the team’s defensive spark with two big first half interceptions, while Irwin added another on the final play of the half.
The Lions completed the scoring in the second half, when Meier completed a short pass to Szczuka, who found an open seam and raced through the Lancers defense for a 61-yard touchdown.
JSerra, which improved to 7-0 on the season, outscored its’ tournament opposition by a cumulative score of 116-18.
In the Turf Division title game, Newport Harbor defeated Esperanza 12-7.
